TASK ACHIEVEMENT

The Prompt is explore

Examiners are looking for you to mention and address each part of the prompt. This doesn’t mean you have to write about them equally in your essay but as much as you can try to mention all the different aspects.

Beginning at 0 on the line graph the numbers soared to 10 within 4 units.

Good Example

New technologies and ways of buying and selling are transforming the lives of consumers.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

You need to mention:

  • New technologies
  • Ways of buying and selling
  • Are they transforming the lives of consumers
  • Do you agree or disagree?
  • How much do you agree or disagree?

Candidate’s Response (Introduction Paragraph)

New technologies, and in particular the Internet, are undoubtedly having a major impact on the way goods and services are retailed.
In many territories, purchasing products online has now become a mainstream activity.
Some argue that this isn’t transformatory and merely an extension of what has already occurred.
However, this essay concludes that it is in fact a paradigm shift for two primary reasons.

Analysis

The candidate has spoken about new technologies, linked this with the ways of buying,
spoken about whether this is a transformatory, given an opinion to the ‘what extent’ part of the question,
and very precisely communicated whether they agree or disagree.

Bad Example

Topic: New technologies and ways of buying and selling are transforming the lives of consumers. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Candidate’s Response (Introduction Paragraph):

The Internet is undoubtedly making a difference to the shopping. In many country, buying a products online has become very popular. While some think that does nothing and it wouldn’t change a thing. I think it is important for two reasons.

Analysis

  • A limited mention of new technology.
  • A limited mention of retailing online.
  • A bit of a mention of whether this is transformatory.
  • No clear opinion given.

Band 9 Example

The prompt is appropriately addressed and explored in depth.

Example 1 (Opinion Essay)

Topic: New technologies and ways of buying and selling are transforming the lives of consumers. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Model Answer:

New technologies, and in particular the Internet, are undoubtedly having a major impact on the way goods and services are retailed. In many territories, purchasing products online has now become a mainstream activity. Some argue that this isn’t transformatory and merely an extension of what has already occurred. However, this essay concludes that it is in fact a paradigm shift for two primary reasons.

Examiner Notes

  • Good extended exploration of different technologies.
  • Excellent address of the transformatory aspect.
  • Excellent clear answer to the ‘agree’ and ‘disagree’ part of the question.

The development of online shopping has meant that the market for goods available to the individual has grown dramatically. It is possible to buy virtually anything from what has effectively become a world-wide retail market: exotic foods, art works, rare books, adventure holidays; the list is endless. Previously, accessing certain types of products was impossible for remote communities and many islanders would have to travel vast distances to purchase essential items such as life-saving medicine. This revolution has completely altered this state of affairs.

Examiner Notes

  • Clear indication to the reader about which technology will be discussed.
  • Excellent evaluation of how buying and selling has changed.
  • Again, this is very clearly linked with the transformatory aspect of the question.

In addition, the buyer can now get their groceries or products delivered. This has given many shoppers more hours in the day to do activities that they find meaningful. Going to bricks and mortar retail spaces on a regular basis used to take up significant periods of time. Families, now no longer weighed down by the weekly shop, have more time for Sunday lunch or strolling in the park with their children. Many parents have spoken about the profound positive change this has brought to their lives.

Examiner Notes

  • Good evaluation of the ‘buying’ and ‘selling’ aspect.
  • Good connection with the ‘transformatory’ aspect of the question.
  • Each paragraph is clearly linked with how much ‘do you agree or disagree’ part of the question.

In short, online retailing has transformed the lives of consumers in a myriad of different ways. They not only have wider access to goods but have in many cases improved their work-life balance.

Examiner Notes

  • Excellent support given for the main points raised in the essay.

Conclusion: The essay uses an excellent mixture of details, language, and sentence types to effectively address all the aspects of the prompt.

Example 2 (Problem / Solution Essay)

Topic: Many people believe that zoos have no purpose in today’s world and should be closed. What problems do zoos bring? What are the alternatives to zoos if they are closed?

Model Answer:

Zoos have been controversial since the first opened in Victorian Britain, and many believe they are no longer needed. Critics maintain that they subject animals to cruel and degrading treatment, which can have horrendous long-term consequences for their physical health. Defenders of these institutions point to the vital conservation work undertaken by such enterprises. This essay maintains that zoos should evolve to become nature parks where wildlife is allowed to roam free.

Examiner Notes

  • Excellent extended response that addresses all the key parts of the prompt.
  • Not only is precise language used to address key aspects of the prompt, but the writer has also written very concisely.
  • Very clear identification of the problems and very clear identification of the solutions.

One of the major issues for those who wish to see zoos banned is confinement. They believe that it is wrong to take creatures out of their natural environment, put them in cages, and give them limited space to occupy. Some biologists have shown that this puts them under terrible physical strain. Wildlife in many zoos develop debilitating health issues connected to their joints at a much higher frequency than animals in the wild. The next paragraph will explore ways to mitigate this and also explore a potential alternative.

Examiner Notes

  • Clear identification of what the problem is.
  • Also, this essay very clearly identifies what impact this has.
  • Excellent linking to the solution.

Opponents of zoos have for years argued that it is the tourists that should be locked in cages, not the birds and the beasts. Some of the most successful institutions give animals free reign but ask the visitors to walk around the park in caged walkways. This both protects the visitors and allows the animals their freedom. This solution has gradually been adopted by many zoos across the world and has led to healthier, happier animals.

Examiner Notes

  • Very clear alternative identified.
  • The positive impact of this is also clearly identified.

In conclusion, the primary drawbacks of zoos are not insurmountable, and with careful consideration, an alternative can be implemented. If zoos are reformed, it doesn’t mean that families will no longer be able to enjoy the animals together; it just means that they will need to adapt to better provide for the animals’ well-being.

Examiner Notes

  • A clear alternative is suggested, and there is excellent support for the main points raised in the essay.

Conclusion: All parts of the prompt are explored sufficiently to achieve the task and well-supported at all times in the essay.

Band 8 Example

The prompt is appropriately and sufficiently addressed.

In many territories, purchasing products online has become a mainstream activity. Now in the UK, for example, roughly 12 percent of all economic activity is conducted in cyberspace. While some maintain that the actual impact of the Internet on buying habits is negligible, this essay concludes that it is in fact a paradigm shift for two primary reasons.

Examiner Notes

  • Clear background sentence presented that is connected to the question. However, rather than giving an overview of the key themes and ideas, it is mostly just the question reworded, so still at Band 8.
  • Good overview of the agree side of the argument but little discussion of the ‘transformatory’ impact of these changes.
  • Opposite opinion is presented in general but could be more specific, and no mention of selling.
  • Very clear opinion, and that helps the essay achieve Band 8 in this paragraph.

Firstly, the development of online shopping has meant that the market for goods available to the individual has grown exponentially. It is possible to buy virtually anything from what has effectively become a world-wide retail market: exotic foods, art works, rare books, adventure holidays; the list is endless. A case in point is Pittenweem, a cul-de-sac in the South East of Scotland with few local amenities. It is developing virgin industries for the first time since the collapse of mass manufacturing, all on the back of e-commerce, showing clearly the impact this revolution is having.

Examiner Notes

  • Talking mostly about buying in this paragraph, which is connected to the prompt. But this is still at Band 8 because there is no specific mention of selling anywhere in the essay.
  • Also, minimal discussion of whether online shopping is a new technology.
  • Good linking back to the opinion showing that this is having an impact, but only minimal discussion of whether this change is ‘transformatory.’

In addition, the buyer now has a greater say over the process. Price comparison websites make it easier to find bargains. Shopping can be done at any time between sunrise and sundown. Consumers can browse for as long as they like without pressure from sales assistants. Many shoppers say that disgruntled customer service was a key factor for them not deciding to visit bricks-and-mortar stores on the high street. It seems clear that in order to thrive, businesses must be able to traverse both these commercial spheres.

Examiner Notes

  • Again, the buyer is mentioned, but little discussion of sellers or how transformatory this is.
  • This part is kind of irrelevant: ‘In order to thrive, businesses must be able to traverse both these commercial spheres.’
  • No real discussion in this paragraph as to whether these changes are transformatory.

In short, experience suggests that online retailing has shifted the balance of power in favor of the consumer. Consumers not only have wider access to goods but also have greater access to information and more control over how they purchase. As we move into the future, it will be important to manage this transition so that all can take advantage of this emerging online economy.

Examiner Notes

  • Fairly good but doesn’t address the ‘transformatory aspect.’
  • Good addressing of both the buying and selling aspects of the question, but the issue of selling should have been discussed earlier and in greater detail.
  • No real discussion of how the writer disagrees or whether this change really is transformatory, as the question suggests.

Conclusion: Some excellent engagement with the prompt, with most of the key themes being effectively addressed. However, this is done inconsistently and would remain at Band 8 because the ‘transformatory’ aspect of the prompt is rarely mentioned.

Example 2 (Problem / Solution Essay)

Topic: Many people believe that zoos have no purpose in today’s world and should be closed. What problems do zoos bring? What are the alternatives to zoos if they are closed?

Model Answer:

Zoos have been controversial since the first opened in Victorian Britain. Critics maintain that they subject animals to cruel and degrading treatment, which can have horrendous long-term consequences. This essay maintains that zoos should evolve to become nature parks where wildlife is allowed to roam free.

Examiner Notes

  • Gives an okay background but doesn’t really address all the key themes. No mention of whether zoos have a purpose.
  • A problem is identified, but it is quite unspecific as to what the actual problem is.
  • A clear, specific alternative has been suggested.

One of the major issues for those who wish to see zoos banned is confinement. They believe that it is wrong to take animals out of their natural environment, put them in cages, and allow tourists to gawk at them all day. Some biologists argue that this puts a terrible strain on the mental and physical health of the animals. A case in point is the famous King of the Mambo gorilla in Melbourne, who was eventually put down after he fell into a severe depression and stopped eating. The next paragraph will explore ways to mitigate some of the negatives and also explore a potential solution.

Examiner Notes

  • Very clear outline of what the problems are.
  • Solution and alternative are not exactly the same thing. So this is good linking here, but it is not the most precise way to answer the prompt.

Opponents of zoos have for years argued that it is the tourists that should be locked in cages, not the birds and the beasts. Some of the most successful institutions have allowed the animals free reign but asked the visitors to walk around the park in caged walkways. Therefore, protecting the visitors while allowing the animals their freedom. This can have commercial benefits too; the Orang-utan island in Malaysia saw visitor numbers grow when it adopted this approach. This shows that there can be a happy medium between both points of view.

Examiner Notes

  • A very clear alternative is presented here.
  • This is a slightly irrelevant sentence here that isn’t really connected to the prompt. The question doesn’t ask the candidate to present an opinion.
  • No discussion of whether zoos should be closed.

Finally, it’s crucial that we protect the crucial conservation work undertaken by zoologists while also addressing the concerns of some environmentalists. Hopefully, in the future, we can continue this discussion, exploring a number of new solutions so that all can benefit.

Examiner Notes

  • This sentence is irrelevant and not connected to the prompt: ‘It’s crucial that we protect the crucial conservation work undertaken by zoologists.’
  • Solutions are not exactly the same as alternatives, so this part could be clearer.

Conclusion: Some good engagement with the prompt, including a specific problem identified and a specific alternative suggested. However, the ‘no purpose’ and ‘should be closed’ aspects are barely mentioned. Therefore, this essay stays at Band 8.

Band 7 Example

The main parts of the prompt are appropriately addressed.

Example 1 (Opinion Essay)

Topic: New technologies and ways of buying and selling are transforming the lives of consumers. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Model Answer:

The Internet is undoubtedly having a major impact on the way goods and services are bought and sold. In many countries, buying products online has become a habit. While some maintain that the actual impact of the Internet on shopping is not significant, I would argue that it is in fact quite significant for two main reasons.

Examiner Notes

  • Has mentioned both buying and selling, which is good, but there is no mention of how this change might be ‘transformatory.’
  • Doesn’t really discuss how this might be a new way of shopping.
  • A fairly clear opinion is given here, but it doesn’t state how significant this is or if it is transformatory. This could be much clearer.

The first main reason is that the development of online shopping has meant that the market for goods available to the individual has grown exponentially. It is possible to buy virtually anything from what has effectively become a world-wide retail market: exotic foods, art works, rare books, adventure holidays; the list is endless. Products that were once only available to those who lived in large cosmopolitan cities with a wide variety of shops can now be bought by those living in small towns with few local shops.

Examiner Notes

Some mention of new technology but this could be clearer.

Some mention of buying however neither idea is really showing whether this change is ‘transformative’ or not.

Another significant reason is that the buyer can have more control over the process. Price comparison websites make it easier to find cheap goods. Shopping can be done at any time of the day or night and shoppers can browse for as long as they like without help from sales assistants. This means that a shoppers can potentially get a good knowledge about the products they are buying.

Examiner Notes

Some engagement with the prompt. The first paragraph has focused on new technology and selling. This paragraph has focused on buying so this is ok for Band 7 and there is some engagement with the prompt. However there doesn’t seem to be any discussion of the transformatory aspect.

Conclusion

Experience suggests that online shopping has the consumer know more. Customers not only have wider access to goods but also have greater access to information and more control over how they shop.

Conclusion = Fairly ok discussion of the prompt. Buying, selling and new technology are mentioned. However this isn’t linked with the idea of these changes being transformatory and the discussion of new technology is a bit vague.

Band 7

The main parts of the prompt are appropriately addressed.

Example 2 (Problem / Solution Essays)

Many people believe that zoos have no purpose in today’s world and should be closed. What problems do zoos bring?

What are the alternatives to zoos if they are closed?

The presence of zoos in our cities and towns has been questioned a lot recently, and opinions differ about whether they provide benefits to people and animals, or whether they should be closed.

Examiner Notes

Some connection with the prompt with regards to the ‘many people believe that zoos have no purpose’ part.

This is a repeat of the idea in the first sentence and therefore unnecessary.

Some connection with the prompt but no discussion of what problems they bring or if there is an alternative.

Some ok discussion of the ‘should be closed’ aspect. But this could be much more specific.

Initially, we need to think about the negative issues with zoos. Many people believe it is wrong to take animals out of their natural environment and put them into cages. They believe that this is cruel and is only done to attract visitors and make money. In addition, many people feel that we should not interfere with nature, and if possible, animals should be allowed to stay in their own environment.

Examiner Notes

Some engagement with the prompt with regard to the problems. However this paragraph is very unspecific or clear about what the problem is exactly.

In particular the second problem identified is quite unclear. It needs to be much more clearly explained about why we shouldn’t interfere with nature and what the problem is if we do.

In terms of alternatives, there are a few options that we have. Wildlife parks are becoming more popular in today’s world. These provide more space for animals to wander around and they provide a habitat which is more similar to animals’ natural homes. A more permanent solution which would enable us all to see animals in the wild would be for airlines to reduce their ticket prices. If air travel were cheaper, then we would all be able to see wild animals in their natural habitat and there would be no need for zoos in our cities. We should also promote channels on TV such as National Geographic. Here, people can see wildlife as it should be seen.

Examiner Notes

There’s too many alternatives here which don’t have any supporting explanation or examples. One of the key assessment criteria is to focus on one main idea per paragraph.

Also it’s a huge assumption to say that cheaper airline tickets would lead to more people visiting wild animals. Also what about the environmental damage caused by people flying around the world. While the quality of your ideas doesn’t matter for Band 7; this would matter for Band 8.

Conclusion

As we can see, zoos are not the only way for humans to see and learn about wild animals. If there were no zoos, it would still be possible for scientists and ordinary people to preserve and experience nature.

Examiner Notes

Some ok discussion of whether zoos have a purpose.

Conclusion = Some ok engagement with the prompt but this is often very unspecific and unfocused. The message of the essay is confused. To achieve a higher band you need to focus the message and provide supporting ideas.

Band 6

The main parts of the prompt are addressed (though some may be more fully covered than others). An appropriate format is used.

IELTS Band 6 & 5 Essays

Band 6 – Opinion Essay

Topic: New technologies and ways of buying and selling are transforming the lives of consumers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The Internet is undoubtedly making a difference in shopping. In many countries, buying products online has become very popular. Some think it does nothing, but I believe it is important for two reasons.

Examiner Notes: Some mention of new technology and shopping, but this is very unspecific. Limited mention of selling.

One significant development is online stores, which allow people to buy more things. For example, many items once available only in cities can now be purchased by anyone. Small shops can sell to a global audience, which benefits both buyers and sellers.

Examiner Notes: Limited discussion on how transformative this change is.

Another reason is that customers can compare prices and shop at any time of the day or night. Shoppers can find detailed information about products. A great example is Amazon, where people can find various products at affordable prices.

Conclusion: Online shopping is transforming lives and offers excellent benefits for consumers.

Examiner Notes: The idea of transformation is mentioned, but no strong supporting reasons are given.

Band 6 – Problem/Solution Essay

Topic: Many people believe that zoos have no purpose in today’s world and should be closed. What problems do zoos bring? What are the alternatives?

Zoos are common in many cities, but they can create problems for animals. I believe they should be closed, and alternatives should be considered.

Examiner Notes: Some mention of problems, but very unspecific. Limited mention of alternatives.

One problem with zoos is that they can cause long-term health issues for animals. Keeping animals in small spaces is cruel and done only for profit. Everyone knows this is not ethical.

Examiner Notes: The problem is stated but not fully explained.

As an alternative, larger parks allow animals to live in a natural environment. People can travel to national parks to see animals, reducing the need for zoos.

Conclusion: Zoos are not the only way to observe animals, and national parks provide a better alternative.

Examiner Notes: The alternative is mentioned but not well developed.

Introduction

What are examiners looking for?

One of the key things that examiners want to see in your writing is that the message of your essay is clear throughout your essay. This means having the same ideas communicated in the introduction, middle, and conclusion.

Good Example

In the past, most people used to travel to their place of work. With increased use of computers, the internet, and smartphones, more and more people are starting to work from home.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this development?

Candidate’s Response (Full Essay)

As technological disruption reshapes our lives – the way in which we work continues to evolve. Made possible by the birth of the internet and smartphones, homeworking enables employees to be in constant contact with their colleagues and clients all over the world. Whilst some have really missed water cooler chats, others have found that the flexibility of remote working really suits them. This essay will explore some of the advantages and disadvantages of this phenomenon.

Proponents maintain that one of the key advantages of letting employees work from home is flexibility. This can be particularly useful for carers or the disabled who need unusual hours or who may struggle to travel to a workplace. This can be both beneficial for employers and employees as it offers greater access to talent and improved working conditions. Many workers have benefited from this evolution, and large sections of the post-pandemic workforce in major cities such as London have declined returning to their desks, opting instead for their home environment.

However, home working can have one major disadvantage. Office culture has suffered as many of your colleagues may be on the other side of the world, or you may have never met them at all. Some professionals complain of the loneliness of continuous remote working without the normal office banter that underpins many friendships. The long-term impact of this is still largely unknown, and some businesses have gradually turned away from this style of work.

In conclusion, therefore, there are clearly a number of pros and cons to working from home that will impact different workplaces in a myriad of transformative ways. Some have benefited from these profound shifts in working culture, while others have struggled to adapt.

Analysis: The message is clear throughout the essay. One disadvantage and one advantage are clearly identified in the introduction. These are then explained in the body paragraphs and supported in the conclusion.

Bad Example

In the past, most people used to travel to their place of work. With increased use of computers, the internet, and smartphones, more and more people are starting to work from home.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this development?

Candidate’s Response (Full Essay)

The way in which we work has changed a lot. For some people, they travel to work from their home. A smartphone and internet mean you can doing this now. I think everyone is good to do this and enjoy it.

There are some great things and some negatives. An example is now you don’t have to go by the train to work. You can sit at your computer when you feel like it and the things done. I think that you can enjoy your TV and the family. Doing work from the bedroom when you feel like it. An example is the London people who decide to work from their house and not from a workplace.

A bad thing is at work or your home has many distractions. Many people and children can stop you from working. You find it difficult to speak with people in this way. Some people like to speak with their friends at work and find it difficult to speak with them when they are at home. Also, it can be difficult to concentrates. An example is when the child asks you for help with homework and you want to work.

Final the people are preferring work from home rather than working from the office because they can relax and at work it can be very stress. But from my perspective everyone needs to work in a way that makes them happier.

Analysis: The message is unclear. An advantage is mentioned but not well explained. The disadvantage is also unclear. The overall flow of the essay is hard to follow.

Conclusion

To achieve a high band score, ensure that your essay maintains a clear and consistent message throughout. A well-structured introduction, logical body paragraphs, and a strong conclusion will improve your writing quality.

Band 7

Information and ideas are logically organised, and there is a clear progression throughout the response. (A few lapses may occur, but these are minor.)

Example 2 (Two-Part Essays)

We are becoming increasingly dependent on computer-based technology.

How do you think it will change in the future?

Is it good for us to rely so much on computers?

All of us most days need some kind of computer. Over recent years in particular, their use and potential have gone up fast and I strongly believe that growth will increase as more ways to use these is developed. Although there are definitely some negatives to their use, I do believe positives outweigh the negatives.

Computers enable us to do some things that would have been difficult for previous generations. We can bank online, book stuff, do our weekly shopping. I think speed at they will continue to get better and altered the way we do things. I am convinced that this evolutionary trend will continue. An example is the rise of virtual reality. We can already do amazing things with it, and, as a computer technology, it only begins. It has so many things it can do, from improving gaming to providing training for doctors or pilots to practice.

There are some problems in relying quite so much on the computer. So much of our lives is by them, that without them, modern-day life as we know it is difficult and different. Furthermore, computers store all our important data and the risk of hacking exposes us to crime and bad people. However, I would argue that technology made possible by computers have improved our world in many ways. I believe that most people would argue that that any negative aspect of computer are outweighed by all the benefits they have brought.

In conclusion, I believe we probably become more dependent on computers but that our lives will improve as the technology improves. While there is a negative side to such a dependency, there are many more positives that we can focus on.

Examiner Notes

There is some consistency of message throughout the essay but a lack of language makes this sometimes difficult to understand.

Some clarity of communication here but again the language issues make it difficult to understand in places.

Conclusion

Some consistency of message but this is often interrupted by poor or inappropriate language use.

Band 6

Information and ideas are generally arranged coherently and there is a clear overall progression.

Example 1 (Advantages / Disadvantages Essays)

In the past, most people used to travel to their place of work. With increased use of computers, the internet and smart phones, more and more people are starting to work from home.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this development?

The way in which we work has changed a lot. For some people they travel to work from their home.

Also it can be difficult to concentrates. An example is when the child asks you for help with homework and you want to work.

Final the people are preferring work from home rather than working from the office because they can relax and at work it can be very stress. But from my perspective everyone needs to work in a way that makes them happier.

Examiner Notes

There is some arrangement of ideas but in places the ideas communicated are quite confusing and therefore the message is lost.

Some communication connected to the question and there is some progression but the overall message is unclear.

Conclusion

Some progression of ideas but because some of those ideas are poorly communicated the overall progression of ideas is difficult to follow.
