Band 9 Example – Advantages and Disadvantages Essay
Topic: In the past, most people used to travel to their place of work. With increased use of computers, the internet, and smartphones, more and more people are starting to work from home. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this development?
Model Answer:
As technological disruption reshapes our lives – the way in which we work continues to evolve. Made possible by the birth of the internet and smartphones, homeworking enables employees to be in constant contact with their colleagues and clients all over the world. Whilst some have really missed water cooler chats, others have found that the flexibility of remote working really suits them.
Proponents maintain that one of the key advantages of letting employees work from home is flexibility. This can be particularly useful for carers or the disabled who need unusual hours or who may struggle to travel to a workplace. This is both beneficial for employers and employees as it offers greater access to talent and improved working conditions. Many workers have benefited from this evolution, and large sections of the post-pandemic workforce in major cities such as London have declined returning to their desks, opting instead for their home environment.
However, home working can have one major disadvantage. Office culture has suffered as many of your colleagues may be on the other side of the world or you may have never met them at all. Some professionals complain of the loneliness of continuous remote working without the normal office banter that underpins many friendships. The long-term impact of this is still largely unknown, and some businesses have gradually turned away from this style of work.
In conclusion, therefore, there are clearly a number of pros and cons to working from home that will impact different workplaces in a myriad of transformative ways. Some have benefited from these profound shifts in working culture while others have struggled to adapt.

Band 7 Example – Advantages and Disadvantages Essay
Topic: In the past, most people used to travel to their place of work. With increased use of computers, the internet, and smartphones, more and more people are starting to work from home. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this development?
Model Answer:
The way in which we work has changed a great deal in recent years. Whilst some people still travel to their place of work each day, others have the option to work from home. This has all become possible since the birth of the internet and smartphones, which enable workers to be in constant contact with their colleagues and clients all over the world.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to this new development. There are definite advantages to people being allowed to work from home. The main advantage is that it gives workers more flexibility in their working lives. This can be particularly useful for parents or people who live far from their workplace. Working from home is also more comfortable – you can take a break whenever you need. Another advantage is that you have the possibility to work for companies in other countries through the use of the internet. Therefore, people can apply for jobs globally as well as locally.
On the other hand, working from home can also have its disadvantages. Travelling to work and working in an office with others can be a very sociable activity which many people enjoy, especially if they live on their own. Without this social interaction, many people might feel very lonely. Furthermore, many people may lack sufficient discipline to complete the work they need to do without colleagues around.
In conclusion, therefore, there are clearly advantages and disadvantages to working from home. Perhaps the ideal arrangement would be to spend part of the working week in an office with colleagues and part of the working week at home, with a certain amount of flexibility and comfort.
Band 6 Example – Advantages and Disadvantages Essay
Topic: In the past, most people used to travel to their place of work. With increased use of computers, the internet, and smartphones, more and more people are starting to work from home. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this development?
Model Answer:
The way in which we work has changed a lot. For some people, they travel to work from their home. A smartphone and internet mean you can do this now. I think everyone is good to do this and enjoy it.
There are some great things and some negatives. An example is now you don’t have to go by the train to work. You can sit at your computer when you feel like it and get the things done. I think that you can enjoy your TV and the family. Doing work from the bedroom when you feel like it. An example is the London people who decide to work from their house and not from a workplace.
A bad thing is at work or your home has many distractions. Many people and children can stop you from working. You find it difficult to speak with people in this way. Some people like to speak with their friends at work and find it difficult to speak with them when they are at home. Also, it can be difficult to concentrate. An example is when the child asks you for help with homework and you want to work.
Finally, people are preferring to work from home rather than working from the office because they can relax and at work it can be very stressful. But from my perspective, everyone needs to work in a way that makes them happier.
